IHSA Speech has 14 individual events. Students pick an event and stick with it for the whole season. You deliver the same speech all season.
Traditional Speeches
- Informative Speaking: 8-minute speech that you write and memorize. This speech should inform the audience of something that is relevant to their lives.
- Original Oratory: 8-minute speech that is persuasive in nature. It follows a format of problem-cause-solution. You write the speech and memorize it.
- Special Occasion Speaking: same as Original Oratory, except you pretend you are at a special event—e.g., graduation, induction, etc.
- Oratorical Declamation: You find someone else’s speech. You cut it so that it is 8 minutes long. You memorize that speech and then you deliver it.
- *Impromptu: You are given three topics at the speech competition. You are given 2 minutes to write the speech. And the speech has to be 6 minutes long.
Manuscript Speeches / Performance:
- *Radio: you are given newspaper clippings. You choose 2 international stories, 2 national stories, and 2 local stories. You have 45 minutes to cut and edit and paste these stories together. You read the radio script into a microphone. Delivery has to be 5 minutes. You are usually in a room and no one sees you. You are judged on your cutting, editing, and speaking.
- Prose: you find a short story or essay. You cut the story into an 8-minute piece. You memorize the piece and you perform it with the use of a binder.
- Poetry: This is the same as prose, except that you find poems to read.
Performance / Theater
- Dramatic Interpretation: Find a monologue or a scene from a play with a few characters. Memorize the piece and act the piece out. Time limit: 8 minutes. The piece should be serious in tone.
- Humorous Interpretation: Same as dramatic interpretation, except the piece should be funny.
- Humorous Duet Acting: This is the same as DI and HI, except that you are doing the piece with a partner.
- Dramatic Duet Acting: This is the same as DI and HI, except that you are doing this piece with a partner.
Speech Team Requirements:
- We meet as a team for about an hour once a month.
- You should meet for about 30 minutes – 60 minutes each week. This can be in the morning, during study hall, or after school. It depends on what works best for everyone.
- We attend about 6 to 8 tournaments. They are on Saturdays. They go from early in the morning until around 5 p.m.
- We have two events on Wednesday afternoons. One is at the beginning of the season, and one is at the end of the season.
- Dress. At competition, you are expected to be in professional attire.
- Speech tournaments will begin late October and end in February.
Why you should Join Speech Team:
- It will make you smarter.
- It will increase your confidence.
- You will become a better speaker and gain control over the way you carry yourself.
